The role of civil society organizations in the democratic transition process in Iraq after 2003
Abstract
This research aims to study the role of civil society organizations in the process of democratic transition in Iraq after 2003, during which the country experienced a significant shift from a totalitarian regime to a democratic system. This shift resulted in an active role for civil society organizations in promoting democracy. The research examines the various roles played by these organizations, such as supporting human rights, enhancing political participation, monitoring elections, and raising political and cultural awareness. It also addresses the challenges faced by these organizations, including political interference, lack of financial support, and security difficulties. The study adopts an analytical approach that combines the analysis of previous literature with field interviews conducted with civil society workers.
The research concludes that civil society organizations have played an important role in promoting the democratic transition process despite the significant challenges they faced. The study offers several recommendations to increase the effectiveness of these organizations, such as strengthening their independence, ensuring sustainable financial support, and raising public awareness of their importance. This study provides a valuable contribution to the literature on democratic transition in Iraq and contributes to a deeper understanding of the role of civil society in achieving political stability.
