Abstract

The safe disposal of municipal solid waste represents one of the most critical environmental challenges facing modern societies, due to its severe impacts on public health, the environment, and urban aesthetics, in addition to its broad social and economic repercussions. This issue is particularly significant in Al-Qadisiyyah Governorate, where solid waste management is a central concern for municipalities striving to protect human health and environmental safety. However, Al-Diwaniyah city faces evident challenges arising from waste accumulation, population growth, and limited financial and technical resources. This research aims to assess the current solid waste landfill sites in the governorate using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a spatial analytical tool to evaluate their compliance with environmental and health standards. Furthermore, additional criteria were derived and transformed into maps through spatial analysis functions to determine the most suitable locations for establishing sanitary landfills. The findings indicate that effective solid waste management not only mitigates environmental and health risks but also presents a national economic opportunity through recycling and resource recovery. Conversely, random disposal leads to the loss of potentially valuable resources while exacerbating environmental and health problems
