The use of Quranic verses in the letters of Imam Ali (peace be upon him): An argumentative study
Abstract
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) employed Quranic verses in the texts of his letters in various contexts and made them supports for his arguments to convince the recipients or prove the validity of what he goes to in his letters.
The places of mentioning the holy verses in the letters of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) differed, as we find the Imam relying on a Quranic verse and building his persuasive argument on it to prove his argument based on linguistic and contextual evidence, and he may make mentioning the verse a representation of an idea that he wants to establish its pillars in the letter, or he may mention the holy verse as an argument to support an action he did, or wants to do, or what he asks the recipient to implement.
These different uses of the Holy Quranic verses are imposed by the circumstances of the message, its context and its relationship to the future. Relying on the Holy Quran as a persuasive argument can be a double-edged sword. In the interpretation of the future that agrees with him (peace be upon him), the argument is irrefutable. However, in the interpretation of the opponent, he may interpret it in a way that suits his belief. Therefore, we find Imam Ali (peace be upon him) choosing the verses as strong arguments to support his opinion, enhance the acceptance of the future and urge him to respond to what the sender wants.
