Maladaptive Cognitive Schemas and Their Relationship to Substance Abuse
Abstract
The concept of Maladaptive Cognitive Schemas represents a comprehensive theory in cognitive psychology, developed by Jeffrey E. Young in 1990. Young and his colleagues use this concept to refer to a set of cognitive strategies through which individuals misinterpret information received from the external world via their senses. Young identified eighteen maladaptive schemas grouped into five domains. A closer examination of these domains reveals a strong connection to individuals’ tendencies toward substance abuse.
According to various studies, these schemas lead individuals to adopt avoidance and withdrawal strategies, making them more vulnerable to anxiety, depression, and phobias. A person who finds themselves in a situation involving drug use is more likely than others to engage in substance abuse, influenced by their maladaptive cognitive interpretations of experiences and events.
This study aims to verify this hypothesis and identify the differences in the prevalence of maladaptive cognitive schemas among drug users. The sample consisted of 70 individuals with a history of substance use.
