The Concept of Text in Religious Discourse and Linguistics
Abstract
The term "text" can almost be classified among polysemous terms, as its form is unified while its meaning varies according to its usage and the cognitive field in which it is employed. Thus, it carries a meaning in religious discourse that differs from its meaning in linguistics, and both differ from some of its lexical meanings recorded in dictionaries.
In religious discourse, the text has been viewed as a transmitted entity or material that has reached us without—according to the scope of this study—examining the concept of the text itself, what may be included within it or excluded from it, or the criteria that render this material a “text” while excluding others from being so. These issues are precisely what the concept of text in linguistics investigates and points to.
Accordingly, the idea of this research is based on identifying the concept of this term within both religious discourse and linguistics, preceded by a preliminary discussion that approaches the concept within the intellectual heritage.
